Internal Medicine
Internal Medicine is truly at the very epicenter of allopathic medicine. When one generally refers to needing to see a doctor, they almost invariably mean one who is an expert in internal medicine, better known as an internist. All medical practice and all true medical subspecialties spring forth from internal medicine. Even surgeons are required to have at least one year of internal medicine training to start their residencies. Only the internist is uniquely qualified to follow patients throughout their entire adult lives, has expertise in all major systems of the body, can precisely diagnose and treat a broad range of afflictions, and will initiate prompt and effective treatment to completely address the issue. At the highest end, the elite internist also provides expert guidance, lifestyle counseling, and institutes preventive measures to avoid illness.
