DIALECTICAL BEHAVIOR THERAPY (DBT)

Dialectical behavior (DBT) is a proven process whereby a DBT qualified and trained psychotherapist provides patients with therapeutic skills in four principle areas. The first, “mindfulness”, focuses on improving an individual’s ability to comfortably accept and be calmly present in any real-time situation. The second, “distress tolerance”, provides a specific ability to confidently contend with negativity feelings as opposed to becoming reactive and angry or trying to escape. The third is called “emotion regulation” which covers strategies to control intense emotions. The fourth, is called “interpersonal effectiveness and consists of powerful communication techniques that centralize on self-respect and respect for others as the essential foundation of strengthening relationships.
